In May of 2023, I was looking at our local animal rescue league website and came across an elderly female dog that was in need of a home. I inquired immediately and learned there was already a waiting list for her. I had little hope that we would actually get to meet this girl.
A couple of days later, the animal rescue league emailed me and said the other families had passed on her. She was 11 years old and had a heart murmur that required a medical waiver for her condition and also had some doggy bumps that might require further care as well…something the other families didn’t want to take the chance on. But the coordinator assured me she was a sweet, sweet girl. We didn’t hesitate to head up to the shelter, and the moment I saw her, I swear she was smiling. She had so much energy and excitement when being introduced to us, that my heart couldn’t bear to leave without her. We said YES!
Lora, the coordinator, told us about her story. Her former caretaker had passed away and her best friend puppy was in renal failure and placed in a hospice foster. To help her adjust through that trauma, she got to stay in her office for about a month before being placed for adoption, and Lora quickly developed a special place in her heart for her.
We named her Ana Juliette and bought everything new puppy parents would need. Dog bowls, a big furry bed, a puppy booster seat to keep her safe in the car, but when it came to food, it had to be gluten free considering we are a gluten free home. We bought the same holistic, gluten free brand of food we feed our cats, and she LOVED it. Treats on the other hand…I wanted to take a shot at creating delicious, organic homemade biscuits for her. And she loves them so much that I wanted to share them with you, for your furry loved ones.
To make these biscuits, you will need:
Organic Sweet Potato Puree – 1/3 cup
No Sugar, Creamy Peanut Butter – 2 tbsp
Pastured Eggs – 2 large
Ground Flax Seed – 1 tsp
All-Purpose GF Flour – 1 ½ cups + more for sprinkling (see Notes)
a Dog Bone Cookie Cutter or other desired shape
and a Toothpick
To prepare the biscuits, you will need to:
Preheat the oven to 350°. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk the sweet potato, peanut butter and eggs until well combined. Next add the flour ½ cup at a time and mix until all the ingredients are incorporated.
On a flat surface sprinkled with flour, knead the dough until smooth. Next roll the dough out until it is ¼ to ⅜ inches in thickness or to the thickness desired. Using a dog bone cookie cutter, cut out the shapes and place on the prepared pan (they will not spread during baking). Gather the dough and reroll until all the dough is used, sprinkling additional flour as needed. Finally, punch a hole in the end of each dog bone using a toothpick.
Bake for 20 – 25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool on the pan for an additional 10 minutes. The treats will crisp up as they cool. Store in a sealed container for up to 1 week.
Notes: Choose a Gluten Free/Grain Free flour made with bean flour.
